Start Where You Are. Finding Your Voice in Advocacy

Three Simple Questions to Uncover Your Why and Take Action

Good Morning Friends!!! 🌈☮️❤️️⭐️

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about where to start with advocacy. So, I’m launching a new series to break it down—step by step. Think of it as a field guide for anyone ready to make a difference but unsure where to begin.

This week, we’re tackling a biggie (yes, as in the Notorious one): How do I find my advocacy voice?

Look, finding your “why” takes courage. It’s an act of vulnerability to look within and name what truly matters to you. Here’s the deal: your voice is already within you. No, no, no… I’m not trying to drop bars like Biggie… because honestly, I don’t know what bars are and if you asked me in 7th grade who Biggie was, I would have said Nas.

I’m just going to let that sit there.

But seriously, here’s what I do know. I know a lot about advocacy. So, let’s uncover your why together.

🎯 This Week’s Focus: Finding Your Why

Advocacy without purpose? It’s like chips without the guac or a cheeseball without the cheese—something’s missing. Your “why” fuels your voice and keeps it strong, even on tough days.

Ask yourself these three questions:

  • What issues keep you awake at night?

  • What feels essential to creating a better world?

  • What brings you joy or frustration—enough to act?

For me, my “why” started the night I was brutally attacked. Over time, it’s grown into helping women who care deeply about their communities but feel stuck on how to make an impact. Seriously, this work lights my soul on fire. It brings me so much joy to share every tool I can to help turn your passion into action.

So… What’s your “why”? It might be fighting for equity, creating safer neighborhoods, or ensuring no one in your community is left behind. Whatever it is, own it. Your “why” isn’t forever—it’s just your starting place. You’ve got to start.

One Do-able Action

Start small. Like Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, who began by speaking to small church groups about slavery before becoming a national advocate, your first steps matter.

This week, try one of these:

  • Write It Down: Spend five minutes jotting down your “why.” No filters, just your truth.

  • Share It: Post your “why” or write it in a journal. Tag me if you’re comfortable—I’d love to cheer you on!

  • Research Locally: Explore an issue close to your heart for 15 minutes. Check your local newspaper or community foundation for inspiration.

Need a boost? Brené Brown’s post on “micro-dosing hope” shows how small steps build courage, and Arthur C. Brooks’ Why You Might Need an Adventure offers inspiration for finding joy through challenges.
