I needed this today.
A quick note on MLK Day, the inauguration, and finding strength in every hue.
Hey Friends,
On this MLK Day, nearly 40 years after it was first observed as a federal holiday, I found myself needing to pause. To breathe. To feel.
While many watched today’s inauguration with glee, I couldn’t help but feel unsettled. As I took in who was in the room—and who wasn’t— and the hints of policy decisions, the words of the 47th president left me grappling with what it means to live in this moment, in this America. Beneath the promises of unity and greatness, I felt an undercurrent that shook me to my core.
I cried.
In truth, I’ve cried a lot these last few months. And through the tears—some wiped away by my hands (and if I’m being honest), others licked away by my dog—I reminded myself that all emotions are valid. Every therapist will tell you that.
So, as I often do when searching for clarity, I turned to the wind and looked up at the sun.
This is what I needed today: a reminder that the sun still shines and that the fight for justice must embrace every hue. I hope this poem resonates with you, as it did for me.
Love + Light,
Sophia
“Colorblind”
Breathe In.
I will not be colorblind.
That is like denying the sky its blue,
the earth its tawny,
or the cardinal its red wings,
bold against winter’s branches.
I will not live
within borders drawn by fear,
neatly boxed,
lines pretending to hold truth.
I refuse to erase complexity,
nor pretend the world is black and white.
Justice lives in the gray,
where courage invites us to see
every hue, every life,
every story that defies a neat box.
To be seen is to live.
To be seen is to fight.
To be free—
Mr. President,
to walk into America’s golden sun
you must see its hues.
Our strength
is not in blindness.
It is in the brilliance
of those
who refuse to disappear.
We endure,
like verses etched where margins meet,
sharp, unyielding,
unerasable.
Breathe out.
Terrific poem and great goals. Carry on with your passionate mission.
That resonated with me. Not sure how I found you, but I like your content so far. Thank you.
